Matcha green tea is a ceremonial powdered green tea that has been used in Japan since the 12th century in ritual tea ceremonies known as chanoyu. The word “matcha” actually means “powdered tea”; when you drink matcha, you are drinking dried, powdered tea leaves, whereas with ordinary green tea (or any other type of tea that comes in a bag or as loose tea leaves), you infuse the tea leaves into water and then throw away the tea bag or leaves, so in essence, you’re probably not gaining as many benefits as you would with matcha.

Matcha tea leaves are steamed, dried, aged to increase flavor and then ground into a rich green powder that you can use in a variety of ways. Are There Any Side Effects?

How healthy is matcha? Matcha is considered safe and does not cause any side effects in most people. However, people who are sensitive to caffeine should know that matcha contains more caffeine than regular brewed green tea but less than coffee or black tea. Additionally, a study in the Annals of Internal Medicine has noted an increased risk of esophageal cancer in people who drink very hot tea and smoke or drink alcohol (but this risk is not increased if you do not smoke or drink alcohol).

How Do You Use It?

Matcha is traditionally enjoyed as a hot beverage, in which you whisk 1 to 2 teaspoons of the powder (depending on how strong you like it) with hot water or a warm milk of your choice, but you can also use it in different recipes. You might try adding it to baked goods, like muffins or cakes. Some other creative ideas to experiment with include adding a teaspoon to granola, dusting pancakes with matcha instead of powdered sugar or mixing a teaspoon of matcha with your morning coffee or smoothie.

Many cosmetic companies have jumped on board the matcha bandwagon as well, but you don’t need to go the commercial route; you can try adding matcha powder to different homemade beauty recipes. For example, try making a homemade, moisturizing beauty mask by adding ½ teaspoon of matcha powder to 2 ounces of organic honey. Apply to your face and allow it to set for 5 to 10 minutes, then rinse well and use a warm washcloth to remove any remaining residue. Or, make your own muscle-soothing bath soak by adding a few tablespoons of matcha powder to one cup of Epsom salts and mixing in a full tub of warm water, then relaxing for 20 to 30 minutes. Be sure to rinse your tub well, as matcha may leave a green ring around the edge.

    We choose our words carefully
    The first step to any SEO strategy is to find the right keywords to target. We’ve already touched on this briefly with our hypothetical hiking boots store: queries like “Hiking boots in Burnaby” are obviously a great starting point.

    Keywords have, broadly speaking, four qualities:

    Relevance. “Burgers in Edmonton” won’t be a relevant search for our hiking boot business, so we wouldn’t target it. “Best places to hike near Burnaby”, on the other hand, is a great fit.
    Popularity. “Best places to hike near Burnaby” isn’t that popular of a query – there are quite a number of searches, on the other hand, for “Burnaby hiking trails”. The more popular a keyword is, the better.
    Competition. This is usually directly correlated with popularity – if a keyword is very popular, you’ll have a lot of competition for it. Holy Grail keywords are those with high popularity and low competition (so long, of course, as they’re relevant).
    Intent. This describes what a user wants when they look for a keyword – someone looking up “Burnaby hiking trails” has what we would call informational intent – they want to learn more about hiking in and around Burnaby. Someone looking up “hiking boots Burnaby”, on the other hand, probably has commercial intent – they’re in the market for hiking boots. Informational intent is great for top-of-funnel brand awareness and general SEO boosting, while commercial intent is great for converting searches into sales.
    We take a look at these qualities in every keyword we consider targeting – exactly which factors will be the most important varies substantially based on your business and what your primary SEO-related goals are.

    We craft compelling content
    Once we’ve figured out what keywords we want to target, we need to create content that matches those keywords. Our hiking boot business, for example, might do well with a piece of content titled “Top 10 Places to Hike near Burnaby”.

    Content can take a wide variety of forms, from product pages (to attract commercial intent queries) to blogs (for informational queries, though we’ll always include some form of CTA). Videos, infographics – whatever we think is going to move the needle for your company, that’s what we’ll create. We make sure our content outdoes the content created by your competitors – getting clicks and sustained attention is one of the best ways of boosting your rank.

    We reach out to the people who matter

    Citations are simply online directories. Every local business should build them. They help fortify your NAP (Name, Address and Phone Number) and they are also links (although not very powerful ones) as well.

    The basics which so many SEO agencies get wrong. These are the simple things that let Google know what the page is about. The URL, SEO title, header tags, meta descriptions and alt tags to name a few.

    The first part is the analysis. What service pages should you add? If you’re a painter that might be interior painting, exterior painting and deck staining. The second part is creating service pages that look good AND have enough content on them.     Topical authority is a concept I borrowed from media sites. Cover a topic as thoroughly as you can – this adds credibility. We use this approach when creating blog content for client sites.

    Content Roadmap
    We typically build out our roadmap 6 months in advance. This often means laying out what service pages and location pages need to be added or improved. But once we’ve covered all of those landing pages we’ll move onto creating a blog content roadmap.

    Blog content production
    Most local SEO companies write very low quality content. We have a filter that all of our content goes through. It has to be useful and it has be well written for both humans and search engines.

    Blog content posting & optimization
    Once we’ve written useful, quality content it needs to be posted. This is another area the wheels often fall off. We take the time to post every blog post correctly which means ensuring the on-page elements are done correctly and it’s free from errors.

    Google Search Console
    Google Search Console is an analytics and website health tool. We set this up for every site we work on.

    Google Analytics
    Google Analytics, or GA4 is Google’s most recent version of their tracking platform. It’s always surprising how many sites don’t have any analytical data. This is just another data point we use to ensure a campaign is going as planned.

    Google Conversion Tracking
    Conversion tracking is tricky. Most SEOs aren’t very good at. Most paid advertisers are MUCH better at it. Lucky for us we have a world class pay per click team that helps us to setup conversion tracking in Google Analytics.

    Your Google Business Page, sometimes called GBP or GMB is as important as your website as it relates to your local SEO efforts. Reviews are critical. Having a GBP that is filled out, optimized and living is vital.

    Page Speed Audit
    If your website is slow it’s going to hurt your business. Page speed is overhyped but if your site takes >3s to load, that is an area of concern.
